As some of you will know I’m a counsellor by day and not the political type thank goodness. I love my work and I have particularly enjoyed the last 6 months of opening up my own private practice “Momentum Counselling” based in Belfast.

*

I have a particular interest in obesity, yes it’s an issue personal to my experience but I’m also interested in understanding it from a psychological point of view. I have often thought that obesity is linked to emotional distress therefore explaining why diets don’t work. The statistics for the medium to long term success of diets including Weightwatchers and Unislim are simply awful. Simply going on a diet whilst necessary, is only treating one aspect of a multifaceted problem. I’d even go as far as to say that going on a diet is a relatively minor aspect of dealing with the issue. To deal with and manage obesity effectively a holistic approach is needed. An approach that not only educates on calorie intake, but also informs on healthy eating, emotional welfare and exercise.

In researching this I came across the work of Professor Julia Buckroyd. She is recognised as one of the leading authorities in the field and has developed materials that help people to look at the whole area of using food to manage emotions. She has set up an organisation that delivers small group courses for the public called “Understanding Your Eating” and which has proven to be succesful. I have wanted to do this course for a long period of time but up until recently it only operated in England. To my joy I was offered a place on training course that enabled qualified counsellors to facilitate the “Understanding your Eating” course. Ok so my plan was to experience the course as a participant first but this was an opportunity to good to miss. I spent 3 days under Julia Buckroyd going through the materials and they are excellent. They confirmed a lot of my personal theories as correct. If you have the chance to get on one of these courses take it. I believe it will open many doors which on the past you have only really dreamt of opening.

For further details about the course and where it’s currently being offered hit this link. If you are from Northern Ireland feel free to contact me at Momentum Counselling and I will hopefully be able to wire you into a local course. Lets face it at worst you will learn a little more about yourself and it certainly won’t hurt. At best it may equip you to deal with obesity effectively!

That is really interesting. I know nothing at all about the emotional/psychological side of overeating and gaining weight. It's never really discussed much, apart from just mentioned in passing. It's something I want to find out more about, and probably won't succeed without doing so, so thanks for this post!
